ἀδιγόρ <Iranian; Early Byzantine period>
👉 ἀδιγόρ – a Scythian word with the meaning of τρωξαλλίς, i.e., ‘locust’ (Hsch. α 1130).
⚠ Hsch. α 1130: ἀδιγόρ· τρωξαλλίς, ὑπὸ Σκυθῶν – “adigor: locust (is so called) by Scythians”.
🅔 A Scythian word without a convincing etymology. Cf. some proposals: 1. a compound with the meaning ‘food eater’, i.e. ἀδι- ‘food’ (IE root *h1ed- ‘to eat’) and -γορ ‘eater’ (Iranian *garH- ‘to swallow’ or hu̯ar- ‘to consume, eat’); 2. ‘grass eater’, i.e. ἀδι- ‘grass’ (Sanskrit andhas- ‘a herb; the Soma plant; Soma juice; grassy ground’, but not exactly ‘grass’) and -γορ ‘eater’ (as above); 3. a comparison to Hsch. σ 576: σιγαλ[φ]οί· οἱ ἄφωνοι. καὶ οἱ ἄγριοι τέττιγες – “sigaloi: voiceless ones. And wild cicadas” (quoted as σιγαλ(λ)οί); 4. from a Turkish name of a people.
