ἄγον <Egyptian; Roman period>

👉 ἄγον – an Egyptian gloss with the meaning of σέρις ἥμερος ‘(cultivated) endive (Cichorium endivia L.)’ (Dsc. 2.132 RV).

Dsc. 2.132 RV: σέρις ἥμερος· (...) Αἰγύπτιοι ἄγον (...). – “Seris hēmeros (cultivated endive): (...) the Egyptians (call it) agon (...)”.

🅔 An Egyptian word without etymology, but see ἀγονουχί. Cf. an old explanation: from the Egyptian gj.w (not jg.w) perh. ‘a species of Cyperus L.’.
