ἀρῶς <Iranian; Early Byzantine period>
👉 ἀρῶς – a Persian word defined as ἀριθμοῦ ὄνομα, i.e. ‘a name of a number’ (Hsch. α 7607).
⚠ Hsch. α 7607: ἀρῶς· ἀριθμοῦ ὄνομα, παρὰ Πέρσαις – “arōs: a name of a number, among Persians”.
🅔 A Persian word without a precisely known meaning and a convincing etymology. According to a hypothesis, ἀριθμός in the gloss means ‘amount’ and, hence, ἀρῶς is connected with Middle Persian harwisp ‘all’ etc.
