ἀναραβάχην <Semitic; Roman period>
👉 ἀναραβάχην (vv.ll. ἀναραβήχην, ἀραβάχην, Latin arabarchin) acc. sg. – ‘high priest’ (Jos., AJ 3.151).
– “There were garments both for all the other priests whom they call chaanaias, and in particular for the high priest, whom they denominate anarabachēn (it signifies ‘high priest’).” (trans. L.H. Feldman).
🅔 A distorted and Hellenised transliteration of an Aramaic term, probably Jewish Aramaic khnʾ rbʾ ‘high priest’. The accusative ending is Greek.
