ἀργυῖτας <Phrygian; Early Byzantine period>

👉 ἀργυῖτας – a Phrygian gloss with the meaning of λάμια ‘a kind of shark’ (Hsch α 7115); the meaning of Λάμια ‘Lamia (a fabulous monster)’ is also possible. No doubt the gloss is corrupted; cf. the incorrect alphabetical order: ῎Αρειος πάγος, †ἀρειούζει, †ἀργυῖτας, ᾿Αρειμάνης, ἀρείφατον λῆμα; perhaps the beginning of the gloss was originally ἀρει- (it is at least likely that Ε was miswritten as Γ in majuscule).

Hsch. α 7115: †ἀργυῖτας· τὴν λαμίαν. Φρύγες – argyitas: shark (acc. sg.). Phrygians”.

🅔 Perhaps a Phrygian word.
